Debut or Die — The OG idol novel. Ryu Gunwoo wakes up in the body of Park Moondae and must debut as an idol, else his System will kill him. I like it because Moondae is an intelligent but unreliable narrator who doesn’t realize people care about him.

Assistant Manager Kim Hates Idols — Kim Iwol, an exploited office worker, wakes up as the next member of his manager’s daughter’s favorite idol group. I love it because the more you learn about Iwol, the more you realize he’s a Freakk. His pre-transmigration life is so horrible it’s funny, and his System is mean to him too 😭

The Trashy PD Has to Survive as an Idol — Seo Hoyun, an unethical TV producer who “evil edits” idol shows for drama and ratings, transmigrates to a parallel world and needs to debut to return home. I like it because Hoyun is a petty bitch and straight up a bad person <3

Hundreds of years passed, and he was revived as a child.

But... What was that? Mount Hua Sect has fallen? What kind of bullshit is that!?

Why you should read it:

Chung Myung is a real freak. He's got a bad personality. He's been compared to a rabid shih tzu.

It’s not a power fantasy, and it doesn’t just follow an OP protagonist around. The biggest regret of Chung Myung’s first life was focusing on his own strength instead of ensuring his sect’s survival, so there’s a lot emphasis on the supporting characters’ growth.

It's SO funny. Again, Chung Myung has a personality that makes everyone want to throttle him at all times.

It's touching. This is what I love most about RotMHS, apart from Chung Myung's personality. Given how funny and batshit insane he is, you tend to forget that he watched everyone he loved die in front of him. His grief hits when you've let your guard down and is all the more effective because of it.

It has great prose and some of the best action sequences l've read in a translated novel.

It respects women. Whenever men look down on her, Yu Iseol viciously crushes them. Tang Soso also has a massive girl crush on her because of it. They’re very sweet.

The webtoon is INCREDIBLE. Incredible character design - no two characters look similar, down to the silhouettes. Not everyone is deathly pale, and monolids exist!! The composition, especially for fight scenes, is striking. It also stays very true to the novel. You can tell the artists love it.

The remaining recommendations are for idol novels. I don't even like kpop, they're just really good.

2. Debut or Die

Summary (Shortened):

A student who had been preparing for the Civil Service examination for 4 years suddenly found himself in an unfamiliar body, 3 years in the past. Along with it came a status window displaying a threat right before his eyes!

[Status Abnormality: 'Debut or Die' occurs!]

A diary about the transformation of the main character, who was suddenly challenged to be an idol even though he had never been in the industry before, due to the sudden threat of death.

Why you should read it:

This is the OG idol novel. If you want a story about idols, people will always point you towards DoD first, and for good reason.

Park Moondae is a fascinating character and unreliable narrator. He cares a lot about others even if he thinks he doesn't, and doesn't realize that people care about him too.

Later on, there's an interesting mystery surrounding how and why he's in Park Moondae's body, what happened to the original Moondae, and what happened to his past identity, Ryu Gunwoo.

It has a good webtoon adaptation too!

3. Assistant Manager Kim Hates Idols

Summary:

Not only does he have to fangirl on behalf of the manager's daughter, but now he has to debut as an idol himself?

Assistant Manager Kim really hates idols.

Why you should read it:

The more you learn about Kim Iwol, the more insane he seems. He's not normal.

He lived such a HORRIBLE life ong.... His job was hilariously, cartoonishly abusive and the more you learn about Iwol's past the more you go. oh honey... this explains so much about you. He thinks working 22 hours a day, 7 days a week, is normal, and he's GOOD at it.

He's one of the most unreliable narrators I know of.

His System is so mean to him. please give him a break 😭

4. The Trashy PD Has to Survive as an Idol

Summary (Shortened):

[Congratulations Seo Hoyun! You have been selected as a player in the Unknown Idol Tycoon.]

The good-for-nothing PD, who is criticized by everyone, becomes an unknown idol in a parallel world. Only his younger sibling remembers him. To return to the original world, he must become a top idol and clear the game!

His specialty is blackmailing, his hobby is persuasion. The survival story of the unscrupulous PD-turned-idol who will stop at nothing!

Why you should read it:

Seo Hoyun is, above all else, a petty bitch. He's a straight up bad person. I love him.

I see people comparing him to Cale from TCF because they're both schemers, but l disagree. Hoyun is actually a bad person. If being a gaslighting male manipulator was an Olympic sport, he would be the gold medalist. Is he irredeemable though? Probably not...

The fact that his brother remembers him from pre-transmigration is intriguing and unique for this genre.

He's very protective of people he considers his own, which at first was just his brother. It's sweet to see his group members slowly be added to that list.

A webtoon adaptation is coming out on March 8th!!!

Screams echoed. Bodies slammed into the dirt. The sun beat down mercilessly, but Cheongmyeong stood in the center, arms crossed, brows drawn tight like a disappointed mother.

“Is this what you call swordsmanship?” he barked, voice sharp as a drawn blade. “If I gave my sword to a chicken and blindfolded it, it would still have better form than that!”

Groans of pain and indignation rose, but no one dared talk back.

They were terrified of him, sure—but also in awe of him.

Cheong Myeong rolled his eyes. He’d said the same insult three days ago. He needed new material. Something to keep them on edge a little longer. (In a good way, of course.)

Still, he watched them. These scrappy, loud-mouthed brats. Some talented, some hopeless. Most were bruised in body and spirit. But they kept coming back. (As if they had a choice..) Every day. Even when they knew they'd be pushed to their limits, cursed at, and thrown to the ground like sacks of rice.

Why?

He didn’t understand it.

And he didn’t realize he’d been watching in silence for a while—until a voice cut through his thoughts.

“Cheong Myeong,” Yoon Jong said quietly, walking up with a flask. “You forgot to drink again.”

Cheong Myeong took the flask, grunting something that could have been gratitude, though it sounded more like a growl.

Behind Yoon Jong, Jo Gul was dragging Yu Iseol back to her feet after a particularly bad fall. Tang Soso was berating the younger disciples, mimicking Cheongmyeong's voice in a way that made some of them laugh. Even Baek Chun was smiling faintly, despite the fact his clothes were caked with mud.

They were all tired. Hurt. Angry.

But they weren’t afraid.

Not truly.

Not of him.

Because they knew he wouldn’t let anything happen to them.

Because they trusted him.

A strange, uncomfortable warmth bloomed in his chest.

He turned away before anyone could see the flicker in his eyes.

Cheong Myeong had died once already. Covered in blood. Fought against the heavenly demon, Cheon Ma only to die next to the mountains of bodies that belonged to his sworn brothers. Later causing the fall of Mount Hua from honor. (Which he's working on rebuilding it even better than before.)

But in this life—this ridiculous, noisy, exhausting second chance—he had people. He swore he'll train so they can protect themselves. To protect their loved ones, their home. Mount Hua.

He had people who trusted his back in battle.

People who brought him water when he forgot.

Analisis on yoon jong and yu iseol

I understend why so many People are pissed at yoon jong(ch. 1535) and yu iseol(ch. 1725) because they are asking imposible out off chung myung and are blaming him for giving up on finding a way to cure baek cheon. However we need to remember the history betwen characters and how long each of them know each other. Because if you think in this way sudenly ewerything start to make more sens.

Baek cheon was the first disciple in beak generation. That meens when yu iseol and yoon jong first joined hwasen baek cheon was already here and probably the only kid in hwasen. He was literaly like their older Brother. The only person in hwasen their Age back then. Both yu iseol and yoon jong were very Young when thei joined hwasen.

Now remember reaction of jo gul and tang soso. Althou they were very afected by his declining health they didn't blame chung myung on giving up and I think it's because they have diferent relationship with baek cheon. Jo gul Come to hwasen far later then the other two not mentioning soso. They care about him deaply but not in the same way. Beak cheon was with them when they have nothing even thou he had posibility for a better life.

Of course chung myung also cares deply about beak cheon. It was stated that in this life the person he least wants to see dead is baek cheon. He depends on him and his will. He reminds him of chung mun. But chung myung saw all of mount hua die once and this creates a diferrent reaction and Bond.

What i wanted to Say is that yoon jong and yu iseol reaction is very logical if we think how long their history with baek cheon is and what role did he have in thir lives.

Like of course they would be angry if they saw someone giving up on curing baek cheon. My family and freands would propably had the same reaction if they saw someone give up on my health. And I know it first hand. For a lot of People who love chung myung it can Look anoying but it is very light scolding for giving up on someone you love. It's not about finding solutioon but on giving up on hope to ever cure him. They asked him what to do but they wanted direction and hope that something can be done even if it's false hope.

And thats why i liked thas chapters because it showed they diferences And conflict. In every relationship thare will be conflict because we are human And we have diferent experiences And opinions. Both yoon jong and yu iseol lost someone they love and they are not going to lose someone like that again. Chung myung lost to much. Jo gul and soso lost no one but lived in a toxic envirovment.

Of course you can find them annoying but I wanted to point out why its in character and why it happens.

for those who aren't familiar, the fic being referred to is this one!

I love this so much that's so funny actually HAHSHHDSAKJD

Tang Bo literally jumping through every hoop known to man just so he could get Tang Gunak and Chung Myung to divorce. Of course, Chung Myung needs someone to support her (and him, by extension).

But that person has to be unobtrusive and trustworthy enough. Since Tang Bo's still a kid, he also needs someone who can not only protect Chung Myung, but also provide for them. He wishes he can grow older faster, but he knows how to compromise. Even if it grates at him, he'll do what he can.

Obviously, Tang Gunak—that traitorous descendant of his—doesn't deserve Chung Myung's time with how he didn't even realize she was pregnant until she was about to give birth. A terrible husband, for sure. Tang Bo refuses to recognize him as his father in this life.

So Tang Bo makes a checklist of all the potential suitors (some were suggested by Tang Soso, great descendant by the way since she helped Chung Myung give birth safely). Some characters were quickly crossed out after one meeting and hearing rumors about them like that suspicious Jang Ilso guy.

He goes through the list of Mount Hua members and the closest person he could accept to being his replacement father was Yu Iseol, but the way Tang Soso crossed out her name from their list herself threw a big wench into his plan.

He was so close to giving up, but then a bright light of hope appeared in front him. A bright light that bounced off his beautiful bald head.

Unobtrusive, calm demeanor, A CELIBATE MONK.

He runs over to Hye Yeon who looks and smiles at Chung Myung's child with absolute patience and understanding in the face of Tang Bo's manic eyes.

And then Hye Yeon's mind blanks out depsite hearing the choked coughing from Tang Gunak to the side and Chung Myung's cursing at her own son when Tang Bo tells him with complete seriousness,

"Please be my new father."

i was scrolling on twt to see ppl talking abt how mangakas write/design female character and i wanted to know ur opinion on biga’s writing for female characters!! (despite being very little…. (＞人＜;))

also can we talk abt jo gul in the latest chapter his hair is saur cute….

humm.. i dont think i have any real serious complaints about the way biga writes his few female characters.. from what ive read so far, it doesnt seem as if he writes his female characters any differently than he does his male characters so theres no weird clash in motive or drive or wat have you.. compared to many other authors who only write their female characters as damsels in distress or simpering demure love interests, i really like that yu iseol and tang soso are both treated as equals to their male counterparts and that they both have important supporting roles in the story and dont have to rely on the men to save them

i like their silly quirks, like yu iseols stoicism and her fading into the background bc she has such an unobtrusive atmosphere about her (though i also read this as being sort of a way to get her out of the picture when biga doesnt feel like writing her + he can bring her into a scene at any point for plot reasons and explain away her random appearance as 'she was always there' due to this), and sosos 'violent doctor' trope is always fun to me, but despite this i fear biga does suffer from token female character syndrome.. iseolsoso are like literally the only two girls in the whole novel, with speaking roles at least cuz there are background female mount hua disciples but im not counting them

where im at in the novel currently, neither tang soso or yu iseol have really hit their "stride" yet so to speak so i cant really speak on the bigger picture but aside from some minor gripes, i like the way biga handles his female characters.. i adore them both and it really is such a breath of fresh air to see female characters written w the respect and strength they deserve, and not as stupid ass weak love interests UGH THE BAR IS SO LOWWWW

laundry day was always the busiest time of the week.

well, it's not like you had anything better to do, as one of the physically weaker disciples of the sect, there was an unspoken expectation that you and the others like you would have to pull your weight around here in other ways.

you just wished more people wanted to pull their weight in the housekeeping aspect, instead of all flocking to the book-keeping jobs. it sucked that the majority of the housework was left in your hands, but what can a girl do?

sitting alone by the running stream, you worked hard at cleaning the dirt and stains off the pristine white uniforms you all wore, staying careful not to rip open tears and loose threads in the fabric. you look at the pile of clothing you had left, feeling your eye twitch when you saw the state that they were all in.

you sigh.

a long, drawn out sigh with your head thrown back. the sky above you that was once a dark shade of indigo had grown to a pale violet — the air in your lungs was cold and crisp. the water running in the stream smelt fresh, like the earth it came out from further up the mountains. you leave your hand in the stream, shivering at the icy feeling of the water running over your skin.

deciding that it was a long enough break, you shook your hands dry, digging into the unwashed clothes trying to pick out the uniform with the least defects so you could just mindlessly scrub on it without that added worry of wear and tear.

by the time you were done, the sun was hanging high up in the sky, and your back felt hot from how long you had been hunched over without ever going under the shade.

carefully, you balance the bigger laundry basket on your head while trying to rest the other on the curve of your hip.

the sound of shoes crunching on gravel comes up behind you. there wasn't a need for you to turn and look, you'd already guessed who it was by their footsteps alone.

...i'll take that.

yu iseol walks over, hands grabbing on the rounded edges of the woven basket. tugging on it lightly, having you loosen your grip a little.

you let her have it. stifling a giggle when her face was completely hidden behind the towering pile. yu iseol hugs the basket to her chest, shifting on her feet wondering when were you heading off to dry the clothes.

you say softly, one hand balancing the basket on your head and the other reaching out to hold your senior sister's hand.

she lets you, quietly noting how your fingers felt against her calloused palms. hers were long, thin and rather scarred, and yours were a little smaller and..

her thumb rests over your fingers, your soft and squishy fingers. almost like a baby's. but maybe it's because your hands had been in and out of the water for the past few hours, they've become wrinkly — just like an old man's.

you hear a low scoff. looking over from the corner of your eye, you follow yu iseol's gaze to see her looking at your interlocked hands tenderly.

the back of your ears grow heated at the sight, your eyes dart back to the path in front of you, determined not to look back again and have your eyes meet hers.

what was that look she had back there?

you silently hoped the shadow cast by the basket on your head was dark enough to hide the slight steam of bashfulness that was probably escaping the pores of your skin right then.

yu iseol shut her eyes, letting you lead her to wherever, she knew you wouldn't ever lead her down a path where she could trip and fall over. well, she couldn't even if she tried since she had good reflexes.

but still, she lets her guard down around you. it wasn't that hard to do that anyway. it was nice being around you, after all.

hand-in-hand, the two of you walked under the endless rows of trees, yu iseol basked in the brief pockets of warm sunlight that hit her face, listening to the soft synchronised breathing passing between you two. the critters chattered above your heads and the red leaves of autumn crunched beneath your feet.

there was a slight shake in your voice, it wasn't really out of fear, that much she could tell. she should ask the others later, they might know the reasons why better than she did.

you were lucky that your senior sister had volunteered to help today. what would have been a job that took you almost three hours was done in one, leaving you some time to kick off your shoes and take a break while waiting for the clothes to dry out.

a while back, the sect had some money to spare. and since it was also your birthday coincidentally, the elders had asked if there was anything you wanted.

you had asked for a wooden platform to be built where you hung the laundry, and what a great request it had been. now in autumn, surrounded by a sea of oranges and reds, you lie down with your legs hanging over the edge, face turned up to the skies as your eyes made out the shapes of the clouds.

normally, yu iseol would have taken this time to train or work on her physique. but she didn't have her sword with her, nor did she want to leave you alone in the forest to go and get it. besides, the weather today was nice, and a few hours of doing nothing wouldn't hurt anyone. that guy would probably even pay her money to take a breather for a bit.

you look over, watching her shuffle a little closer to you. giggling, you link your arm with hers, pulling her to your side, shoulders bumping against each other's.

the both of you stayed like that for a long time, eyes closed, lingering between staying awake and falling asleep. it wasn't until a cold gush of air blew across the forest, causing the trees to knock branches and the leaves to fly across the ground — jostling you awake.

by then, the sun was sinking down the mountain peaks, the once vibrant blues of the afternoon sky had been painted with streaks of evening pink.

for someone who didn't care about her appearance all that much, she sure didn't look the least bit shabby. your eyes trailed over her dark plum-brown locks that shone a deep indigo under the setting sun. it wasn't just her hair, the same orange light danced across the curve of her cheek — the slight plumpness that led down to her sharp jawline, angled perfectly to frame her soft lower lip topped with a cupid's bow that strung an arrow straight to your heart. her nose was pointed and a little small, the slope of it led your gaze up to her eyes. her lashes were long with each one hand-crafted by the gods to curl perfectly around her two downturned eyes, each holding a pool of pale violet that had turned into a blooming lilac with a thin golden ring circling the dark centre of her irises.

a pair that were looking straight back into yours.

your heart jumped up to your mouth. not expecting that she had woken up while you were busy staring at her so shamelessly.

yu iseol sounds in acknowledgement. her expression still as neutral as ever. though if you hadn't been so preoccupied with the panicking, you would have noticed the rosy tint on the tips of her ears.

she states, matter-of-factly and lifts herself off the platform, walking over to the clothesline where the hanging laundry had almost been forgotten. she collects the clothes calmly, as though whatever she pulled on you just now was just any other regular day.

you remained lying on that wooden platform, mind reeling from what just transpired. you wanted to yell, to scream, to throw yourself off the cliff but you couldn't do that while she was still here. you choked back from spitting out blood in sheer agony. if your senior sister kept playing with you like this, you doubt you had any longer to live.

🐌: btw for tangchung's daughter, how about the name 松劉梅 (sōng liú méi), which is 송유매 (song-yoo-mae) in korean... the characters 劉 and 유 are the same as the one as the "yoo" in yoo iseol's name and the character 梅 means plum blossoms while the character 松 means pine tree.. idk mannn i just had a thought while coming up with my oc's name lol

OOOH yumae/liumei sounds lovely, her having the same characters from yu iseols name just made me grit my teeth omg foreshadowing.. is there any reason for ‘song’ which im guessing u meant to have that as being her surname or is there none..
